Union Peak

Salem, Oregon

We’ve been waiting a long time to bring this one to you. After more than 2 years, this house has finally come together – and what a result! While challenging, the results have been fantastic. As time has progressed – so has the vision. Changes along the way have added extensive landscaping and hardscaping outside with privacy walls, amazing blue-stone pavers, a mason fire-pit, imported antique fountain from Europe, brick planters, and brick outcroppings. The outdoor patio area includes custom built wood cased screens for hot summer days. From painted woodwork, extensive masonry both inside and out, reclaimed timbers spanning large distances, intricate tile work, and a floor plan that harkens back to a French countryside Manor, there are details to capture your attention around every corner. Inside you will find many details, including soapstone counter tops, touch sensitive faucets, amazing cabinetry and paint, intricate wainscoting, detailed faux painting on the bathroom wall, a heated Italian tile floor with stand alone claw foot tub, and amazing reclaimed timbers spanning large spacious rooms. Other interesting facts include two sets of washers and dryers at either ends of the home, a separate apartment upstairs with full kitchen, a four bay garage with a stamped concrete surface, and overlay appliance panels to hide their presence. The house features a stucco and stone exterior accented by copper gutters and a tile roof. Mix this with large decorative wood shutters and carefully selected light fixtures around the house and the pieces come together nicely.

Perhaps you have noticed the large dark cabinet adjacent to the fireplace by now. Purpose-built for a media system, those custom-made lead glass doors hide a large screen TV and sound system.

Throughout the house, electrical plugs were cut into the tall base board and painted to blend in. Just another detail that while not immediately evident, adds to the overall feeling of upscale, high quality craftsmanship.

If you enjoy cooking, this is the range for you. With a massive hood vent, 6 spacious burners, and an intricate tile back splash, preparing a gourmet meal becomes a whole lot easier. These cabinets are a step above most. Not only are they finger joint assembled, but also come with soft close rail systems and are flush mounted – no cabinet door sits on top of the frame, but rather in it. Separating the kitchen area from a desk work area and a small nook is a central pantry for dry goods storage. Wrapping around the pantry is a cabinet unit with a drawer mounted microwave. Opposite the desk area is a coat closet for guests. The desk area is perfect for light work at home with a great view out to the patio which features a built in fireplace. One thing that is evident from the exterior is that each window has a real stone sill.

The adjacent bedroom leaves nothing to be desired with a separate bathroom and large walk in closet.

Exercise Room: At the far end of the home lies the exercise room with cork flooring and a television to keep you occupied on the treadmill. More to come!

Great Room:  One of the first things you will notice about this room is the reclaimed timber beam work that stretches across the ceiling. While decorative in nature, they give a fantastic representation of an old house with exposed rafters.

The sitting area is anchored by a wood burning fireplace made from one piece of stone. Yes, one piece – this large stone fireplace surround was cut on one of only a few cable saws in Oregon big enough to handle the single stone. From there, great effort was put into getting the details just right. The homeowner elected to use a pre-finished, engineered hardwood floor. While great to look at, the span from one room to another, and the distance that had to be covered by boards laid end to end, presented an unique challenge.

With a shallow brick barrel vault ceiling, the kitchen has a flavor all to itself. This kitchen features soap stone counter-tops and some of the most detail driven custom cabinetry that we have ever done. Careful attention was also paid to the stain and rub through process in order to give the cabinets depth and character. High stool seating affords a great vantage point as your chef slices and dices the fresh catch of the day. This kitchen features three separate sinks including one main farm sink, one prep sink, and one sink adjacent to the wine rack and beverage cooler. One interesting feature throughout the house are the “floating” shelves. These are in fact hollow shelves that slip onto a metal frame that is attached to the wall. Lighting is hidden in the hollow core of the bottom shelf for greater visibility at the counter top. If wine is your beverage of choice, than this is where you are going to want to display all those vintage labels. Featuring bottle storage, slotted racks for wine glasses, and a beverage cooler unit, everything you need is within arms’ length.

Sinks throughout the house featured touch sensitivity – meaning not only can water be turned on the traditional way with a lever, but each faucet can also be operated with a touch to the stem as well.  Perhaps looking at these pictures you begin to wonder where all the appliances have gone. Not to worry, custom appliance panels were built to cover everything from the refrigerator to the trash compactor. Below you can see a dishwasher to the left of the sink, a trash compactor to the right, and a subzero refrigerator against the wall to the right. Also evident is the built in vacuum system with floor vents. Simply sweep debris up to the slot, operate a foot lever, and the counter-top cast-offs disappear!

The eating nook is a much more  casual and relaxed area to enjoy breakfast – especially with a wall mounted TV to start the day right. A gas line was plumbed to the ceiling area for mounting a gas heater in the future should the homeowner decide to spend evenings outside when the days begin to cool.  French doors provide access to either the nook eating area or straight to the dining area with the kitchen sandwiched between.
