Every home needs a statement piece.
From the smallest budget to the greatest, a focal point adds interest and value and art.
For some homes, the beadwork can be the flair. In others, entry tile work and or, a brick archway.
The focal point should obviously, compliment the theme of the home — and yes, every home has a theme regardless of intent.
As I’ve mentioned in other posts, the fireplace can be an extra special place to add outstanding details.
I’m a big fan of blacksmith forged ironwork. This wood burning fireplace’s doors were handmade by a forgery in Bend, Oregon. Blacksmith forgeries still exist and I encourage everyone with an ounce of cowboy in them to invest in a little ironwork in their home.
In the above kitchen you can see the relief detail of the kitchen ceiling. This, is a focal point. It is a simple addition to the room and easy to do (dare I say).
One or two great focal points can make up for so much! So you don’t have $6m to pour into a house? It’s not necessary. What’s necessary is creativity and sometimes a few repurposed, reinvented materials.
